Native American Heritage Month Celebration

Join us in the VSL parking lot for an event in celebration of Native American Heritage Month with Kentucky Indigenous Peoples (KIP), honoring indigenous identity and culture. The Village Speaks Series

The Village School of Louisville will open in Fall 2021 to Grades 1-8 in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. The mission of the Village School of Louisville is threefold: To offer joyful learning, teach gender equity, and provide a true community of support for the whole family. As a start to supporting the whole family, VSL is proud to present The Village Speaks, a virtual speaker series for parents, educators, and community members who want to learn more about how to help children succeed in a modern school environment. After each speaker there will be a question and answer opportunity for the speaker, as well as for the VSL Founder, Heather Harrell. 

The Village Speaks is complimentary to all; a donation of $25 is suggested.

Bringing Social Justice into Schools - The Value of an Anti-Bias Curriculum in the Classroom: Join us as we host Dr. Christia Brown, Developmental Psychologist at The University of Kentucky and a member of VSL's Advisory Council; she will discuss her research on Anti-Bias Curriculum. Our world has recently highlighted the systemic stereotypes and racism that are pervasive-- sometimes subtle and subconscious and sometimes blatant. Dr. Brown researches the development of gender and race stereotypes in children and advises the Village School on curriculum to promote equity in education. Afterwards there will be a question and answer opportunity for the speaker, as well as for the VSL Founder, Heather Harrell.

Joy and Play Are Essential to Learning: Dr. Christy McGee and Terry Fontenot, both VSL Board Members, will discuss how research finds that joy is essential to learning, not just an added bonus. They will present ways to increase joy in every learning environment. Dr. McGee is a Professor of Education at Bellarmine University. Mr. Fontenot is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapy Supervisor. He founded the Kentucky Association for Play Therapy and served on the national board of the Association for Play Therapy for 6 years.

Benefits of Nature at Every Age: Dr. Sarah Ivens is the best-selling author of nine lifestyle and wellness books, including Forest Therapy: Seasonal Ways to Embrace Nature for a Happier You. She will present and discuss her findings on how forest school and time in nature can benefit all ages, not just preschool age children.
